$100 notes not a Lunar New Year issue

If you can get new $100 notes from your banks for the Lunar New Year this year, consider yourself lucky.

A spokesman for the Monetary Authority of Singapore's Currency Department told me this morning that the $100 is not a LNY issue. Only $2, $5, $10 and some $50 are.

So, if you were to ask your bank for $100 notes -- like I did -- you will be told that they have only recirculated notes. MAS says that it will only issue new $100 notes when there is a shortage of such notes.

I guess not many people put $100 notes in their ang pows. Anyway, two $50 will do the trick.

Ha, ha! I wonder if this might be construed as a commentary on the frugality of our highly paid ministers, MPs and government servants as well as the big money earners in fields such as finance?

As a child I remember that often the richer the couple/family or the higher their status the less that 'lai sees' contained! A case of "if you look after the pennies the pounds will look after themselves"?

In a wider context, I am surprised that many of the promoters of charitable and other worthy causes lend of their time and names but do not lead from the front by donating sums of money that might be commensurate with their asset worth.

Haha, Pern Yew, why not just write a check in place of the brand new $100 note?

Auntie Lucia,
It is not the same thing. Nothing like the feel of a crispy $100 note. Recipients may also misinterpret your intention. :))))
